Pickled Herring (Inlagd Sill)

Dressing Ingredients

  • Herring Filets
  • ¾ cup white spirit vinegar(12%)
  • ¾ cup water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 chopped onion
  • ¼ teaspoon thyme
  • ½ teaspoon crushed allspice
  • ½ teaspoon crushed white peppercorns 2 bay leaves

Garnish Ingredients

  • 1 red onion, sliced thinly
  • 2 T. coarsely chopped parsley
  • ½ teaspoon crushed allspice

Instructions

  • Mix all the ingredients for the dressing in a saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil, stirring in order to dissolve the sugar.
  • Allow it to boil for several minutes, then leave to cool.
  • Arrange herring pieces in a broad, flat-bottomed bowl.
  • Pour the cold dressing on top.
  • Garnish with red onion slices, parsley and crushed allspice.
